We have made the decision to have the architect and the structural engineer self-certify the building plans submitted to the city. This is primarily because the 1st appointment for review with the DOB was November 9th, which was too late to be starting this discussion. With the new process we may begin excavating as early as the first week in October - I'm calling it the "Big Dig." The idea of course is to get the hole dug, concrete poured, masonry done and the box closed up before it gets too cold.

In preparation for the "Big Dig" we had a couple of things on our to do list. We are going to put a tent in the backyard to house some of our building supplies while we are working on the garden apartment. In order to put that tent up, and in homage to the first day of Autumn, it was time for the deck to go.

The Deck - Before

The deck is quite large and this is a shot of what it looked like from the garden before the team started to tear it down.

The first cut

Raul fires up the sawsall and starts chopping up the deck.

Top Gone

The top came off pretty quickly and without the planks to stabilize things, the deck got kind of wiggly.

Down to the fram

The team made pretty short work of it, getting down to the frame really quickly.

Almost gone

The last part took the longest, detaching all the bolted and heavy beams.

Now I'm deckless

So I have a few days to enjoy the view of my backyard and garden before we fill it up with building supplies and dirt!

So now I am deckless and waiting patiently for the "Big Dig" to begin.
