One Pair of Stately Front Doors Coming Up!

One of the the biggest disconnects with my brownstone was the current front door and what it communicated about the quality of the house itself.

The current, single front door with faux transom.

The current, single front door with faux transom.

When it comes to creating curb appeal, everyone knows how important a front door is. The front door on my house with it's faux transom was probably appropriate when the Black Panthers and hookers ruled the streets here. Now however, the front door isn't reflective of the upscale neighborhood or the stature of what my house is becoming.

First, I did a surveillance of the neighborhood streets capturing pictures of all the stately front doors I liked and thought might be suitable.

When I felt like I knew what I loved, I began searching. I searched and met with artisans and craftsman - some that build replica doors from scratch and those that salvage old doors and update them.

Enter Amighini in New Jersey. They salvage doors from across the US and Europe, restore them, adjust sizing, repair and replace moldings and then they install them complete with custom casements and modern day hardware packages.

They found a pair of doors that would work on my opening and did this photoshop rendering to show me what they might look like.

In the end, I chose to skip the metal work for now and have instead chosen a very thick reed security glass. I can always add iron work if I feel it is necessary.

This week I saw the repaired and stained doors for the first time.

The doors are solid Mahogany and I chose to stain them with black espresso stain. The pictures above reflect two coats of stain and will be varnished with two coats of marine poly in a satin finish.

Finger's crossed that they get the glass put in today and we can do the install on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Finally, my house will have a face on the street that reflects the beauty that is flourishing inside.
